While friendlies don’t count towards the 50-win mark for Charlotte FC, one of the biggest wins for Charlotte FC came in front of a home crowd against European power Chelsea FC.
Five months into the Club’s inaugural season, they took on the 2021 Champions League winners in a mid-season friendly. Chelsea came out with a 3-4-3 that included the likes of Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, Thiago Silva and Reece James. On the bench, Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz, Mason Mount and Raheem Sterling sat waiting to come in to face the first-year MLS club.
Chelsea outdueled Charlotte FC in the first half, including Pulisic scoring a goal in the 30th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Charlotte FC tried to fight back in the first half as they subbed players in to get their opportunity against a Premier League club. As the match was winding down in the 89th minute then-manager Christian Lattanzio subbed on 16-year-old academy product Brian Romero.
Romero made the most of his opportunity, dribbling into the box and taking a shot before Trevoh Chalobah deflected the shot with his hand. The handball gave The Crown the chance to equalize the match in the 90th minute. Daniel Ríos took the penalty, slotting the shot past the keeper.
Because it was a friendly, the match went straight to penalties. One-by-one, each team converted their penalties until, on Chelsea’s third attempt, Conor Gallagher’s penalty was saved by Pablo Sisniega. The saved penalty allowed The Crown to win the match as Joseph Mora and Kamil Jóźwiak converted their penalty kicks, giving Charlotte FC the upset over the Premier League powerhouse.
